Display Protocols

Both ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 on copyright page

The following is the standard format, in the order shown:

ISBN-13: 978-1-56619-909-4
ISBN-10: 1-56619-909-3


Process changes should start by:
January 1, 2005
Single ISBN (13 digit) on all publications after:
January 1, 2007
This format applies to the copyright pages of all books printed between January 1, 2005 , and January 1, 2007 , both new publications and reprinted backlist.  After January 1, 2007 , only the ISBN-13 should be printed and identified as “ISBN”.

* Books with publication dates earlier than January 2007 may have both ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 on copyright page.

* Titles with publications dates of January 2007 or later must have only ISBN-13 on copyright page and above EAN bar code

* Backlist product reprinted after January 2007 should have only ISBN-13 on the copyright page and above the EAN bar code. However, publishers may continue printing both ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 where their market requires both or where the publisher anticipates few, if any, subsequent reprintings.

Eye-Readable ISBN Above Bar Code on Cover 4 Before January 1, 2007

Printing only the ISBN-10 above the bar code is recommended for titles published before January 1, 2007 .

Printing only the ISBN-13 above the bar code is recommended for titles published after January 1, 2007 . Books with publication dates earlier than January 2007 may have both ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 printed above EAN bar code on the back of the book.

  If the needs of a specific market require both ISBN-13 and ISBN-10, the ISBN-10 should be printed above the ISBN-13.

  As of January 2007, UPC bar code should not be printed on any titles, frontlist or backlist. EAN13 bar code only should be on back of book.
